Explorers of Our World

Subject Area(s):  Social studies, English and Technology

Grade Level(s):  5

Topics:  Explorers of our World

Purpose of Lesson:  

1.  Students will learn how to navigate the Internet.

2.  To communicate via email

3.  To search for informative information.  

4.  To correctly use word processing and other programs on the computer in order to write a short but informative report.

5.  To learn how to collect, organize and present data.

 

Materials Needed:

Computer accesses for all students.  Computers need to have Microsoft Word and PowerPoint software installed.

Directions of the steps of the assignment.

A list of questions to answer.

Floppy discs for each Student.

Time Required:  3 - 4 days


Lesson Procedure:

  Day 1 and 2:

   1.  Assign each group of 2 or 3 an explorer.

   2.  Give students the first web sites where they are to go and find the list of questions about their             explorer.  www.schoolnotes.com

   3.  Instruct students to take notes from at least three different sources found on the web.

   4.  Have students to find the answer to the assigned questions from the three sources then email the teacher the answer.

 Day 3-4:

  5.  Students will then compile a one-page report taken from their notes.  Using Microsoft word.

  6.  Students will then create a presentation using PowerPoint.  The information they will use again will come from their notes.

  7.  Students will choose graphics and sound to go with their slide.

The teacher will then assemble all slides together and show as one presentation.

Evaluation: 

The teacher will have students complete a series of questions pertaining to their explorer.  The slide show created by each student will also demonstrate the knowledge acquired in this activity.

Extension Activity:

(optional)- Students may choose to demonstrate life in colonial America after the explorers founded a specific area.  Students will color a book of colonial people with captions which explain who they are and what role they played in the new country.  Charts, pictures or written reports could also be used.
