As the only high school and the largest and most modern public building in Union County , this facility was designed to serve numerous community and educational functions. Major spaces include a 1,200 seat Auditorium, a 1,600 seat Gymnasium (with capacity for 2200), a Library with seating for 50, and a Commons/Dining area with seating for 300. Architects Weeks Ambrose McDonald, Inc. designed each building component (academic, vocational, fine arts, and physical education) along two central spines allowing both independent operation and control of each component.  The spines intersect at the two story central commons/dining area where people naturally gather to eat, talk, or meet “at the clock tower”, The  administration block and main entry are also adjacent to the commons area to control access and monitor student activity. This enables the building to function, either wholly or segmentally, both during and after school hours for school activities, extracurricular activities, special school and community events, public meetings, conferences, and business and community fairs.  All instructional and circulation areas utilize natural lighting to enhance the environment for learning.

The majority of the exterior is masonry, incorporating a two‑color scheme for the oversized brick and custom precast accents, which lends scale to the building mass. The masonry elements are extended to the interior and complement exposed steel, porcelain floor tiles, glass paneled handrails, drywall and acoustical treatment, all of which enhance the quality of the spaces. The project received the 2000 Tennessee School Board Association High School of the Year Award.

The master plan organizes the 80 acre site around the school which is enclosed by a security fence. School vehicular circulation and parking, special event circulation and parking, and bus drop-off and visitor parking are all separated. Other site elements include a greenhouse; 1,600 seat football stadium completed in 1999; football, soccer, baseball and softball facilities and fields; an Adult Education and Alternative School completed in 2000; and environmental and community parks. Scheduled for completion in 2003 is a facility for ticket sales, concessions, maintenance, and athlete dressing.
