TENNESSEE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
FOR
STUDENTS ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL IN THE
2009-2010
SCHOOL YEAR
In 2005, a
joint effort between the State Board of Education and the State Department of
Education was initiated to establish
what students graduating from high school should know and be able to do in
preparation for workforce training or college. The result of this effort is a
program entitled, The Tennessee Diploma Project.
A critical part of this program is the new graduation requirements
which will impact this school year’s eight grade students (2008-2009.)
Their high school graduation requirements include:
English 4 units
Social Studies 3 units
Mathematics 4 units
Science 3 units
Wellness 1 unit
Personal Finance .5 units
Physical Education .5 units
*Fine Arts 1 unit
*Foreign Language 2 units of same language
**Elective Focus 3 units (Career and Technical or Academic Area)
*The Fine
Arts and Foreign Language requirements may be waived for students who are sure
they are not going to attend a University and be replaced with courses designed
to enhance and expand the elective focus. (The state Board of Education will
approve the waiver according to request
of the local Board of Education).
**Each student will choose an
elective focus in a career cluster or subject area which should relate to
his/her career goals.
Students with disabilities will be
required to take a math class each year achieving at least Algebra I and
Geometry. Additionally, they will take 3 credits in science with Biology I,
Chemistry or Physics, and 1 additional lab science course.
There will be a presentation at Union County
High on February 24,
2009
for
eight grade students and their parents/guardians to further explain these new
requirements, give additional information, and answer questions. It is requested
that all parents/guardians attend with their children. Any parent/guardian who
is unable to attend should contact the School Counseling Department at the High
School before your child registers for high school classes.
Prior to the eighth grade open house,
on February
19 and 20,
the students will visit the High School to see the facilities and program
offerings.
High school registration will take
place at the middle school during history class on March 5 and 6. We hope
that the parents and guardians will discuss the course offerings with their
children.
You will
receive further notice of these dates through the mail.
