Dylan Hayes Wins County Spelling Bee

The Annual Union County Spelling Bee was held on February 18, 2005, in the Library at Union County High School. Sherrie Lynn Collins, English instructor at UCHS, pronounced the words for the spellers.  Judges were Ada Mae Houston, retired Vocational Office Education instructor at Horace Maynard High School; and Pearl Coffey, Parent Involvement Coordinator, and Fred West, Director of Union County Adult Education.  Patricia McKelvey, spelling bee coordinator, introduced the participants and reviewed the rules for the spelling bee.

Fourth runner-up was Nathan Davis, representing Luttrell Elementary School. Nathan is the son of Julie and Luther Davis of Luttrell.  Third runner-up was Claire Mallicoat, daughter of Timothy and Paige Mallicoat of Corryton.  Claire, a student in Terry Bowling’s Fourth Grade, represented Big Ridge Elementary School.  Seth Shelton was second runner-up.  Seth is the son of Mike and Robin Shelton of Maynardville, a sixth grade student at Horace Maynard Middle School.  First runner-up was Savannah Clabough representing Sharps Chapel Elementary School.  Savannah is the daughter of the late David Clabough and Pamela Clabough of Sharps Chapel.  She is in Wilma Tolliver’s fifth grade class. Dylan Hayes, a fifth grade student in Carolyn Murr’s fifth grade, won the spelling bee.  Dylan is the son of Steve and Kelly Hayes of Maynardville.  He will compete in the News Sentinel Regional Spelling Bee at the Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Hall, University of Tennessee Knoxville Campus on Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 1:30 P.M.

Charles E. Thomas, Director of Union County Schools, congratulated each participant and presented the awards.  For winning the county spelling bee, Dylan Hayes received a certificate, a framed memento, and a copy of Webster’s International Dictionary.  He also received $25.00 from the Union County Education Association.  Each of the other participants received a framed photo memento of the spelling bee participants and a copy of Webster’s International Dictionary.

Thanks to each person attending the spelling bee for their support.  We congratulate each of the school level winners on their success and wish Dylan the best of luck in the regional spelling bee.
