Week 1- August 13-17

Well school has started and my new job is under way. I am somewhat overwhelmed by it all. I look forward to working with the teachers, but at the same time I feel a little sad about giving up my class. I know this is an unbelievable opportunity and I look forward to learning and growing right along with the teachers and students.

We had our first faculty meeting of the year and I addressed my fellow teachers and introduced them to our grant and our plan of action. I was met with a lot of support and a little apprehension. I can relate to how they are feeling, but I know they can do this. My assistant coaches have been selected and I feel confident that they will be valuable assets to their team members and me.

As we begin this week, I will introduce the teachers to epals and train the teachers on schoolnotes. Most of us are already registered with schoolnotes; we just need to keep it updated. We shall see what lies ahead. See you next week.

Week 2-August 20-24

Well 70 % of teachers are on schoolnotes.com and we will continue to monitor and make sure that they are being updated. I am working on getting the rest of the faculty on and deleting those teachers that are no longer teaching in our county.

10% of the teachers are on epals.com. I am in the process of getting the rest on. We have begun to assess the students using the STAR program and Compass programs. 70% of the teachers have sent me copies of their students' scores. I have also started outlining projects for the teachers to use as examples for their own projects. Five teachers have already started their first project and we have not even received the contract and we have not ordered the new equipment. I was overwhelmed last week because I was afraid they wouldn't be this excited, and I am equally overwhelmed because they are. I am loving this job!!

Week 3-August 27-31

Still working on epals. We have several teachers who are experiencing difficulty with their computers. We have hubs down and servers down and not enough time in the day to get them fixed. They are resourceful however. Many are using the library and several are using fellow teacher's computers. We have a great staff. I feel lucky to be working with these wonderful people. We are not complaining, we are dealing and doing the best we can.

I have been working with my benchmark committee and we are just about ready to submit our rough draft. I will be glad when this part is over. I hope we are doing it right. There has been a little bit o confusion over it.

Projects are going well so far. Many of the teachers are using digital cameras and word processing for their first project. Lower grade teachers are directing their students in writing their own stories and publishing using word and their digital images to illustrate. I am impressed with what I have seen so far.

I am having difficulty motivating a small few. They are my goal for next week.

Week 4-September 4-7

A great week has just reached its end. More and more teachers are becoming involved. I still have a few to get registered on epals and 3 more for schoolnotes. When they are on I will have 100% of the teachers registered. Now for getting these ladies and gentlemen to keep them updated.

Now all we need is our contract signed and we can really get going. I can't wait!!

September 10-14

What a horrible tragedy we have experienced this week. I am in a state of shock. I really had a hard time keeping focused on the tasks that were laid before me. My fellow teachers have felt the same. I believe we are all walking around in a daze.

That being said, I can tell you it was tough getting on with life. We are still working hard to get everyone on epals and keeping their schoolnotes up to date. We are holding after school workshops to train our teachers on these things. So far we are having a great turn out. We are also having some problems with other programs and individual work stations in our school. We have an average of 20 computers not working due to hub problems or power supply. Our technology department is working double time to correct these problems. We have at least 4 computers in each classroom in grades K-3 and 9 in grades 4 and 5. It is a huge task.

Our goal for next week in 100% participation in schoolnotes and at the very least 60% on epals. It is harder to do when our computers are not working to their complete ability.

Here's hoping for a better week! :)

September 17- 21

Wow what a week!! I can't begin to tell you how busy it has been. We have been doing Terrific Tuesday training sessions after school and I have had a full house this week and I will have a full house next week if the sign up sheet is any indication. The teachers are still overwhelmed but for the most part everyone is trying to do their part with a positive attitude. Most of the faculty is working on their first project even though the equipment has not yet arrived. We have our two basketball teams working on student made programs using word, digital cameras and designing a cover using Kidpix. The cheerleaders and their coach are making a Memory book showcasing their games, competitions and camps using word and digital images. Each student on these teams are writing their own biography and player stats. This has really helped getting our PE teachers involved in the grant and using technology.

Open House was this week and it has been exciting watching how the teachers were preparing for this night. Several of the teachers have created slide shows with their students using digital images and Kidpix and putting them on PowerPoint. It was a great edition to their student's regular work that we show during open house. The Parent's seemed to enjoy watching the shows and were impressed with the designs the students had incorporated into the presentation.

Thursday we had a little problem with the w32nimda virus. Our system was corrupted and over 3000 files were infected and had to be repaired. We are uncertain how long we will be down. This is not what we need at this time. I am working with my teachers to keep them motivated and positive.

September 24-28

We have had a very busy week here at MES. When the w32nimda virus was finally isolated we found out that our server had to be completely rebuilt and several of the workstations had to have Norton anti-virus installed. We have 400+ computers in our school and only about 1/3 of those had Norton protection on them and those that did have it had not been updated. This was either due to teachers not knowing how or missing the update when it came out on Wednesday. Needless to say we had a lot of work in store for ourselves.

Keeping an optimistic approach we used our Asst. Coaches to help with the problem. We spent 1 day and 1/2 of another moving from workstation to workstation and installing and updating Norton. By doing this we were able to get a monumental task completed in 1/2 the time it would have taken our 2 Technicians to complete. We also received valuable training. Now each teacher (all 58) knows how to run a live update and how to scan for viruses. It was a tough job but a wonderful opportunity for the rest of the faculty to see how hard the technology staff work and what a massive job it is to run a school with that amount of machines.

It is now Friday and our server is whole again and we take away a valuable lesson. One should never be lax in their virus protection. We are proof of that!

We spent one week without AR and Compass, two of our major programs our school uses these programs as extra practice and for testing purposes. We were unsure for three or more days if we would still have the student data or if it had been lost. I am Happy to report that all is well.

ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR VIRUS LIST!!!!!!

October 1-5

We have had another busy week! Our laptops have arrived! I am very excited but I have a lot of work ahead of me. After school trainings are going well, We have 70% of our teachers using epals and several more are signed up to train next week. I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm we have experienced in the last few weeks. Many are working on their projects and I am very impressed with the results I have seen so far. Our P.E. teachers are working very hard on their projects. They are using Printshop and a digital camera to display the P.E. students of the month. One student in each grade is selected, a digital photograph is taken and downloaded to Printshop were the child designs their page and write what they like most about P.E.. The P.E teachers also write a little note about the student and why they were chosen. It has been a great success!

We are all enjoying the PowerPoint slide shows and we are working on compiling the class shows into one and having a school slideshow to present at our Awards Day Ceremony at the end of the school year. It will be great to see the slides the teachers and students have created.

I was so excited after leaving our training on Thursday. My teachers were also excited to learn that they could incorporate their favorite lesson plans into our technology plan. I learned so much; I look forward to sharing all the ideas I brought back. I am amazed daily that there is so many wonderful ideas out

Here for us to use.

October 8- 12

It has been another busy week. We have been working very hard to get our laptops up and going. We have had some very good training sessions this week. I had a full house for our PowerPoint training; I was very impressed with the ideas the teachers have come up with. I think everyone ending up learning from one another. We had 17 show up for training and only 14 had signed up. I am so overwhelmed by the response we have had. I am very proud of my teachers and all that they have accomplished so far.

We have had several teachers submit their first projects. I am very impressed with their creativity and integration ideas. One teacher read the book *Brown Bear, Brown Bear* to her students. She then put her students on the computer to re-write the story using their classmates. For example-Teacher, Teacher what do you see? I see Zach looking at me. Zach would then tell who he saw and so on. The illustrations were done using a digital camera and inserting the pictures on the document. They then bound the book and designed a cover page. It is adorable and the children love reading a story about their class.

A fourth grade teacher is in the process of creating a scavenger hunt for his class using schoolnotes.com. He is designing it so that his students will learn how to surf the web to find answers to various questions. His topic is space. He has provided links to his schoolnotes address with questions under the link. The answers can be found only using the links. After the students find the answers they will have to type them out and email them to their teacher. The emailed answers will serve as the evidence that the activity is complete and will help the teacher get a grade for that activity. He is using some wonderful sites; nasakids.com and spacekids.com are two of these. They have a vast amount of information. When this project is complete I will add the URL to my page.

October 15-19

It is a new week and it has been filled with new adventures. I can*t express how exciting it is to see the teachers getting involved with this grant. I am never lacking for training participants, and it is wonderful to see them working together and teaching each other as they go along. I really love getting their projects to look at. There are so many possibilities it is astounding. Many teachers are interested in using Tom Snyder*s Graph Club and those that have been very creative. Graphing is one of our weak areas and the kids are showing a lot of enthusiasm and seem to be learning a great deal. We have finally ordered our wireless lab. We had some complications but everything is good to go now. I can*t wait to get this going.

Terrific Tuesday Training went wonderful this week. We had a few setbacks with the server but they were all things we can learn from. This week we did another PowerPoint training and we worked on inserting digital images and sound bites. The teachers were very creative. I had a lot of positive feedback and several have started creating slide shows with their students. Our goal is to put all of these slide shows together and show it at our end of school ceremony. It will be exciting to see how these teachers have used PowerPoint with their curriculum.

Dr. Ted Miller came here on Thursday and Friday to begin our evaluation process. Most of the teachers were okay with the idea, only a small few felt intimidated. I believe everything went well. I hope so anyway. The teacher that had the targeted visit did a Graph club activity. The students loved it. I was also impressed. She did a great job. She brought me the graph that the students had made and their explanations. They were very well done and so colorful. The teacher was pleased with the program because it was easy to use. I think she thought these projects were going to be hard. I think that many are realizing that they do not have to change what they teach, just add another element.

October 22-26

We have had a great week here at MES! I have had a lot of positive feedback concerning the projects. The teachers are working so hard and I truly appreciate all that they have accomplished thus far. I still have a few who are slow to get going. Intimidation by Computer seems to be the disease. I am trying to alleviate their fears, and slowly but surely I am making some progress. I have spent the better part of this week ordering more equipment. I am anxious for it to get here so that we can get on with the grant and have training with more ease. The lab is wireless and I am looking forward to using it. It was late getting ordered due to the cost and we have to take it slow due to county budget. They have to pay the previous bill before they can order more. It means that we have to take things a little more slowly than I want. I have learned to have more patience.

I have had the pleasure of proofing and evaluating some wonderful projects. Our teachers love Tom Snyder*s Graph club. From Kindergarten through 5th they all seem to enjoy teaching it and incorporating it in to their regular graphing lessons. One of our Kindergarten teachers has been working on her color unit. She has read several books to her children and then went on to vote on the class favorite color. She then instructed her students to wear something BLUE on Thursday (blue was the winner of the vote). She took digital images of her students wearing their blue item. They are going to make their own book using similar text from *Mary Wore A Red Dress* only they will trade red for blue. She then made graphs with her students on Graph Club, separating the boys from the girls. She taught the students how to make bar, line, circle, picture and table graphs and printed them. The children were very exciting and I was the first to see them. I am very proud of her creativity. She has taken one lesson that she would do regardless of computers and turned into something new and fun and finished 2 out of her four projects.

I am very fortunate that I have several teachers with her kind of attitude. I look forward to coming to work and teaching these people about our system and introducing them to new software. I look forward to next week and the TETC, It will be interesting seeing all of the ideas and the new technology that is available.

October 29- Nov. 2

Wow, what a busy and interesting week! I really enjoyed the conference and I am please to add that my fellow teachers enjoyed it as well. Several of my teachers have already asked if they could go back next year. WE hope so! I was impressed by the variety of seminars that were offered and I was also very thrilled that there was something for everyone. Two of our teachers attended the Terra Nova Seminar and were ready to order the website and tools before they left Nashville. They had already called our Assistant Principal to ask for the money to purchase. This is the kind of response we all want to see. Many of the teachers have volunteered to share the ideas and what they have learned this week with their fellow teachers. I am so proud of them. I believe it was what we need as a group to get inspired and motivated to do our jobs in a different way. Teaching children is a tremendous responsibility and it is our job and duty to make it fun and interesting. My teachers loved to Jeopardy with PowerPoint seminar and several have already designed their own games in their minds. I am excited about what I will see from these teachers and what they plan to share with the rest of the faculty. It has been a very busy week and I am exhausted but it was well worth it.

November 5-9

I have had an incredible week. My teachers are responsible for 4 projects by the end of the year. Due to the slow rate of progression involving my equipment I have allowed the teachers a little bit of extra time before their first project was due. I set a deadline of November 30th. We have 57 teachers. Before the deadline I had about 10 projects turned in. Since I set the deadline I have had 30 turned in. I was so excited. I have a deep appreciation for all that the teachers have accomplished. We have so much on our plates as teachers, They are in the process of implementing several new programs including Four Block and trying to get all of their students on level. Adding these projects to their already full load has been a bit overwhelming for them. I can totally relate. We are held accountable for so much, one more thing sort of tips the scales. They have handled it beautifully. They have turned in some fabulous work and I look forward to seeing all that they will accomplish with their students the rest of the year.

Most of the first projects have been using Tom Snyder's Graph Club. It is amazing how they have come up with so many different ways to graph things that they are already working on. One of my teachers incorporated her Dinosaur unit to include a web Scavenger Hunt as well as a graph lesson on the defense strategies of the Plant eating dinosaurs. It was wonderful. Another teacher designed a Web test on the Human Body. Her students had to visit various sites and find the answers to the test questions. When the test was complete they emailed their answers to her. It was quite impressive. She also graphed the lesson. Her students graphed the number of bones in the different parts of the body. She finished two of her projects in one day. I am so pleased and excited. I work with a wonderful group of teachers who are motivated to do all that they can to teach their students. They have the right kind of dedication.

November 12-16

Another week has past and I am amazed at how quickly the first half of the year has flown by. I have had a great week with my teachers. Graph Club is a huge favorite in our school and I am now trying to move them on into a new program. Kidspiration Training will be held the next two weeks followed by KidPix. I am having more and more projects turned in to me. I continue to be impressed by their progress and creativity. I hope that they are truly enjoying what they are learning and teaching their students.

The only problem I seem to be having is several of the teachers think I am the technician. I am in no way a computer tech, nor do I want to be. We have around 420 machines in our building and over 1400 in the county with an army of 3 to take care of them. I know next to nothing about the network and the configurations. I can not fix a computer that I know nothing about. I am in a quandary about how to handle the problem in a way that the teachers do not think I am ignoring them. I have a "Problem" notebook and I report the problems to the techs but beyond that my hands are tied. I understand how the teachers feel but I don't think they are putting themselves in the shoes of the 3 that handle the problems.

There is a small amount of hostility coming from those few that think I am the reason they are not fixed. I promise I am doing what I can.

Stress is 99% of the problem I am sure. I am Hoping a dose of Family and Turkey will help.

November 26- 30

Another very productive week has come to an end. I am so OVERWHELMED! I think the grant is a wonderful thing, but when you have a large school it is hard to juggle and schedule all of your teachers. I set a deadline for our first project to be completed. They are due TODAY! I have all but 5 turned in. Out of 57 teachers I think that is a huge accomplishment. I have had a little grumbling, but for the most part they have not done it to my face or too loudly.

Technical difficulties are still a number 1 issue and of course, a priority. I do what I can, as do our underpaid, overworked and definitly under-appreciated technicians. I am experiencing some degree of hostility from a small number of teachers. I do understand and I do feel their pain. I was there, I know what it's like to have to wait and wait so long that you feel it will never be finished, but two people can only do so much.

On a more positive note, I have several teachers who are working on different projects to submit and then train their peers. I am so excited by the degree of accomplishments these teachers have exhibited. Next week, We have training scheduled Monday through Thursday and each sign up day is full. This is a testement to the dedication and work ethic my teachers exhibit on a daily basis. They do take some of the stress away.

We continue to be held up by our cart for the Wireless Lab. The cart is "on the truck" and has been for 3 weeks. WE (I) am to "the raise a stink" point!!

I agree with some of my fellow coaches that it would be an asset if we were to receive the grant money in full at the onset. It is very hard to stager the ordering process, and work this grant to it's fullest capacity. It seems we are always waiting for something to be ordered or delievered. Thankfully the majority of my teachers are understanding. At least they appear to be.

I hope to see my cart next week!! But then we all have dreams!

December 3-7

Well, we had another exciting week. It was great getting together with my fellow coaches and learning from one another. I was relieved to find that many of you are experiencing some of the same problems and have found wonderful ways to solve the problems or simply adapt to them. Our biggest obstacle has been our wireless lab. We are currently waiting for the arrival of our cart. The laptops have been here for 4 weeks. It is getting beyond ridiculous. I have tracked, traced, cried and begged, none of which have done any good. We are praying for it's arrival next week. It was promised for Tuesday, Let's hope.

If this wasn't enough, there was a misunderstanding with our Benchmarks. We initially sent our revisions on October 14th. They did not make it to Memphis, I believe they are still floating in Cyperspace. I had no clue that they did not arrive in Jen's hands. Evidently when they were opened they were in Wingdings. Lovely. Keep in mind that this was going on right after our virus problem. I was totally unaware that this was going on. Anyway, We resubmitted (just to be safe) on October 30th. It also did not make it to Memphis. Once again I did not have a clue. My mistake was not alerting Jen that they were coming and not putting notice of delivery on them. Friday when we returned to school from Nashville, Jen had sent me an email alerting me that she did not have our Benchmarks. Let the FREAK OUT begin! I could have died. I did not know where they were. I have copies so that wasn't the issue but they were with my file at home. Anyway we found them and I emailed them back to Jen and 5 attempts later she received them in Word text rather than Wingdings. I had to save them to a disk, email them to my personal email and them forward them to Jen. I was at my wits end by the time she finally recieved them. I now know the full meaning of job related anxiety!! I think now everything will be somewhat easier.

December 10-14

OUR CART IS HERE!!!! HOORAY!!! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am. Pathetic HUH? Eastern Computer sent a tech to help me set the lab up and now we are good to go. It is such a load off. Our teachers were beginning to doubt the lab's existance and I was right there with them. I am so excited about the lab. I do need some suggestions on how to manage my time with the lab's checkout. Such as, how often do I need to schedule down time for charging. It is a 20 laptop work center with roughly 1 1/2 - 2 hour battery life. I am concerned with how I should go about scheduling. Should I allow them to check them out or should I assign times? I am open to any suggestions. The teachers are leaving it up to me. At least when I ask for their suggestions, I do not get a response. If anyone has any (suggestions) let me know.

We did not have training this week. My teachers are trying to get ready for break and asked for a week off. I was more than happy to! I think I need a break myself simply to evaluate what I need to be ready for after the holidays. I am scheduling training sessions for contracted services. When I know for sure I will post any openings if any of my fellow coaches would like to come. I know we will be training for Teacher Created Web sites in January, but I am not sure the date as of yet. I hope every one has a wonderful Christmas Holiday!!

January 2-4

Well we are back at school and excited to begin another new year. My daughter has strep throat so I am at home working on technology. Fortunatly for me I had not scheduled anything until early next week. I knew the teachers would need some time to get their students settled in. I have several people lined up to train our teachers. Our first training will be held sometime in the final week of the month. A web designers is coming to train 16 of my teachers on how to create a web site. We are very excited. Myself included. I will let you know when we have a set date. There may be some slots available if any of you are interested in attending.

January 7-11

Let it Snow, Let It Snow, Let it Snow!! We were out of school Monday through Thursday so needless to say Friday had been a day for make up and troubleshooting. I spent the majority of the day updating my files and checking on orders and going door to door finding out what computer problems had arose over the holiday. I think I have a good handle on things and then 5 more problems arise. It seems that no matter how many we get up and running we have 5 more to go down. It is frustrating to all involved. It has been a very slow week for technology. I am sure next week will be a lot more eventful.

January 14-18

Well another great week has come and gone. We have been working very hard to get as many trainings in as we could. Kidpix Deluxe 3 is going to be a huge hit. Several of my teachers have viewed it and are very pleased by the endless possiblities. I think that things are going to be on a more positive note from here on out. Next Monday I will be leading a training on our Wireless lab and Kidpix for our inservice day. I am a little nervous but excited as well. We plan to cover the rules and regulations and also train on the new version of KidPix. I hope that it goes as soothly as I plan. This is the first time I have trained the entire school in one day. Normal training sessions are after school for a couple of hours and I have anywhere from 10 to 15 people. I will train 50 teachers on Monday. I hope I can keep their attention. Inservice is typically not the favorite of trainings around here. I will let you know how it goes.

January 21-25

Well I had a wonderful training day on Monday. The first session was rough but it was with my former grade level and they were very understanding. The "airport" of my wireless lab was not picking up a signal. Ten minutes and a migraine later we discover that the prong in the plug was bent. We did get it fixed but this is an example of what can go wrong with even the most careful planning. We were able to train in the first group and the lab and

Kidpix was a huge success. I had to kick out the first group to make room for the second group. We had allowed for one hour and 15 minutes in each session and everyone wanted longer. I was pleased by this. We held four sessions during inservice and several teachers asked for more after school training on KidPix and several asked for idea sheets that they could add to. I was very excited by their willingness to contribute to the program.

The rest of the week went well. We continue to get in more software and equipment. The teachers have really taken off on the Grant and their ideas are so wonderful. I am impressed daily with what their students have accomplished. I look so forward to seeing what they create with KidPix. I also attended a training day for Compass software on Wednesday. Thursday we had a day off for Flooding. So other than training I have not had a very productive week with the teachers. Project 2 is due on Feb. 8th so I hope to share new Ideas with you soon.

January 28-Feb. 1

Another eventful week has come and gone. The lab is a huge success. It has been a learning experience for one and all. The first day it was checked out 4 laptops died before one hour had passed. The teacher who checked it out next (after it charged again) had 6 to die before 15 minutes were up. The third teacher to check it out had smooth sailing. I must say my headache was huge. I could not understand why they were not lasting. We figured out that the chargers were not making a good connection when we traveled over bumps. That fixed we set them up to charge for the night. Little did I know that the Utility District was going to be working on the lines after school. Power off no charge! The teacher who had checked them out had 16 out of 18 die inside of an hour. We thought that we had a battery problem. I was in a fit. I investigated further and learned of the Line work from the night before. Problem solved. I went home with the worst kind of headache but with the knowledge that there will always be bumps in the road, it is how you go over those bumps that matters.

On a less stressful note. We had Teacher-Created web site training on Friday. It was very informative and we all seemed to take something away with us. The excitment the teachers were feeling was the best part. They are all planning their pages as I type and I look forward to seeing what they accomplish. Many plan to have the students aid in the design process. I provide url as they become available. Our trainer is returning for day 2 next week.

February 4-15

I will be glad to see everyone on Friday. I need a support group after 2 weeks of the lab. I am worn out. My teachers are loving it. They are really using it to its full capacity. I just do not seem to have enough time in the day. I am really jealous of those of you who have a computer lab. We are so over crowded that we just do not have the space for one. I love the wireless but with only one it is a time and scheduling issue. I am writing this as the rest of the school heads home, we were called out early due to snow. I am counting on the fact that it is raining now and I will not get snowed in. It has been so hectic that this is the first opportunity that I have had to sit down and really get anything done. This is a great job for two people. I wonder if I am helping as much as I should be because I can't give each teacher the time they should have. I would love to talk with the rest of you about time management and How you possibly get anything done. It seems I am always running in circles. I do enjoy this job and I find that it makes the day go by so much faster. I hardly realize that the day is over. I want to take a moment to brag on my teachers. They are one hard working group of people. I would love to be able to express my deep appreciation for all that they do on a daily basis. It seems that words are not nearly strong enough. They do their very best to teach their students, while dealing with every kind of interruption and every kind of outside influence. The students really seem to enjoy the lab. I am so excited when I see all that they are learning. I can not walk down the hall without at least five students asking me when the lab will be back in their classroom. The teachers are wonderfully creative. They have come up with some brilliant ideas and I look so forward to posting them so all can benefit by them. We have just received our alphasmarts and the teachers are already swarming the sign up sheets to check the new lab out. Technology is a wonderful thing!

February 18-22

Technology Infusion Efforts:

This week has been an interesting week. We have infused technology through several trainings and many have been teacher-led. We are in the process of training on FrontPage so that teachers and students can build their own class pages. This has been a goal of the teachers and several students are eagerly waiting to participate. On Friday of next week we will have our second web page training. I am enjoying the excitement the teachers are showing in relation to this training. The best part of this training is the cooperation between the teachers. Our Faculty is so large and turnover so great that many of our teachers do not know one another well or are not comfortable with each other. While planning for the training the teachers have been working together to build grade level pages. It has been great. My responses to these weeks trainings have been very positive! The teachers have become more comfortable with the technology and I think they are enjoying working on new projects.

Our goals for the program next year are simply being able to keep up what we have started. We plan to take the library and convert it into a media center complete with all of our new equipment as well as the new items we will buy with our bonus money. (I'm thinking positively!)

Progress Indicators and Attitudinal Shifts: I think our best indicator of success is our teacher attitudes. They began the year with worried minds and fear of the unknown. Now they are working with confidence and pride. The response to the lab is overwhelming. Not a day goes by that it is not in use all day. My teachers are hard workers and strive to do their best everyday. I am completely comfortable in my new role now and I think that the teachers are as well. We as a staff have made progress with our attitudes with one another as well as accepting something new. It is very rewarding when you walk through the halls and see evidence of the program. I love the reaction of the students when they discover something new on the laptops or when they explore a web site for their scavenger hunts. This is what it is all about!

Management Challenges:

Were do I begin? The lab is the most checked out item. I have posted a schedule for check out for each week with 2-hour time slots for each check out, which only allows 2 teachers per day to check out the lab. It has been extremely difficult to instill a sense of fairness in this process. I have several teachers who have been checking the lab out on a weekly basis and others who can't get to the sign up sheet before it is full. I have had to come up with check out rules, which I wanted to avoid. It is wonderful to see the lab in use, but I had hoped the teachers would be more willing to share it. The lab management has been the biggest of my challenges.

February 25- March 1

This has not been a very productive week for me. My daughter woke Sunday morning with a temperature of 100 degrees and by Monday morning had gone down to 99. I took her to school only to be called after about 2 hours. We took her on to the doctor to discover that she had tonsillitis, and ear infection and a mild case of the flu. Needless to say I missed 3 and a half days this week. I had to cancel my training and spent the week holding my baby while she coughed and cried from feeling bad.

I called into school daily only to find out that a few individuals were upset with me for "neglecting" my duties as the coach by not being at school. Needless to say I was a little upset. I came in for a half day on Friday to diffuse the situation and talk with the individuals who were unhappy. I went on to explain that my child was ill and I would not neglect her to be there with the lab. Keep in mind the faculty and staff was told daily of my child's illness and why I would not be there. After much politicking as my dad refers to it, all is well. Next week will be spent working double time on my work to get caught back up.

I did have several teachers’ work together with the lab to train other teachers who had not had the lab yet. It was a wonderful success and it allowed the teachers to learn from each other.

Technology Integration:  Another exciting week has come and gone.   Monday was a snow day.  I know it sounds crazy but we did have some snow.  I had a time scheduled with Mrs. Mincey one of our 5th grade teachers who has been working with her students on building a PowerPoint slide show on the explorers.  I am so impressed with what they have accomplished thus far.   There assignment was to go online and visit sites previously bookmarked by Mrs. Mincey.   They were to pick an explorer and research that explorer and build an informational slide about that individual.   They added facts, maps narration's, graphics and music.  We had planned to finish them up today so that we could go ahead and publish them for everyone's use.  Snow kept us from doing so.     Tuesday was spent working on Kidpix projects with my lower grade teachers.  Many are working to finish their 3rd project before Terra Nova and doing a great job.  One Kindergarten teacher has created a Love Is book for her students while another has rewritten " Mary Wore a Red Dress " with her students using their favorite color and clothing item.  They are wonderful.            Wednesday was spent working with some 5th grade teachers on Storybook Weaver and Kidpix.  Several teachers are using Kidpix in correlation to Social Studies by having the students to research different Native American tribes and build slides on their way of life.  It is such a great feeling to look at these students who are so excited about learning.

Progress Indicators and Attitude shifts:

This week has been a much better week.   I know that the teachers understand that there will be days that I am out.  I hope they now realize that the assistant Coaches are capable of troubleshooting when I am out.  On the whole my teachers are very positive about the program.  I realize how important it is to maintain a good relationship with everyone and not to take things so personally.  I am very fortunate to work with the people I work with.  They are not slackers and they strive to do their best despite the circumstances.    Terra Nova is fast approaching and I have had several teachers tell me that they would not be checking out the lab until they are over.  These are the same teachers who have tried to have it checked out at least once or twice a month since it has been in operation so I do not think that will be a problem.  I believe it will allow the lower grade teachers to have more access.

Management Issues:

My biggest problem in this area is getting everything done.  It is tough to schedule contracted services when people will not call you back, or when they do they don't want to work with you.  I am also trying to schedule visits to other schools for my teachers to visit.  Community night will finally be a reality.  Our goal is to open the lab up at least once a month but I would like to do it twice per month and continue it through the end of June.  So far it seems possible.

Integration of Technology:   This week we have been training on our new grade software that was purchased by the County.  Oran Software is a new gradebook program that allows teachers to do everything from averaging grades to writing lesson plans and organizes their units of study.   The writer of the program is also the trainer.  He and his assistant have spent the better part of the week training our teachers, secretaries and principals on this program.  He also designs the programs to meet each individual counties needs.  We are in the beginning stages, but from what I can see it is going to be great!!  Our teachers will be able to use their laptops to access the program from home as well as at school enabling them to plan using one tool rather than the 3 they use now.  It is a plan book, role book and grade program all in one.                                              Thursday training was held on the Compass program.  Ms. Guthrie from Compass Learning has been working with us to learn all aspects of the program.  It is such a large program and has endless options.  We, the teachers and myself are still learning what all we are capable of doing with this program.  We have also trained on the Compass test maker.   It is a wonderful way to incorporate our own subject matter and personalize it to our thematic units.  Students can also create tests to challenge their peers.   We have had the first session and are anxiously awaiting the second.

As with anything the most obvious way to tell if our efforts are working and the students and teachers are getting benefits from our programs and training's, are the feedback and reactions we receive.   I continue to be dazzled by the quality of work my teachers and students are producing.  It is amazing the creativity that flows from these students when they are given a different media to learn the same curricula.  The new technology has been a real benefit and I know that we feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity.

Lab checkout continues to be steady.  Our biggest problem has been our size.  We need a mobile lab per grade level.  It is so hard to insure that every teacher is getting the lab.  I have had several to tell me that they did not even want to try to use it until Terra Nova and another group who want to get in as often as possible to correlate with what they are re-teaching for Terra Nova.  It is so interesting to see how teachers work with the technology and how different their ideas are.  Some believe it is the best thing ever and that it will be the difference in their scores.  Others feel that it will distract from "crunch Time"  I guess it all depends on personality and teaching styles.

Community Night is finally a reality and the last of my contracting services have been scheduled.  My goal for next week is to get all of my lesson plans and best practices submitted and published as well as finish up with software ordering for teacher incentives.   Hope everyone has a great week!

Integration of Technology:    Well another hectic week has come and gone.   Monday and Tuesday were spent in a flood zone.  We had an impromptu holiday due to the rain and roads being washed away.  Two training's were canceled due to this.  Wednesday we had planned to train on PowerPoint with one of our teachers leading the training.  I am so excited about her project.  I can not wait to post it for all to see.  Her students have really worked hard to put it together.   Thursday we had Oran Software training for each teacher in grades 2-5.  This is our new grade software.  It will be a wonderful thing when we complete the training on it.  There are so many things you can do.  It is totally designed for each county.  It will automatically generate letters for each child's absence as well a vast number of other things.  Several teachers have submitted there 3rd project and are now getting busy reviewing for Terra Nova.  We begin testing on April 3rd and complete the tests on April 12.  It will be a hard week for us and the pressure to do well is huge.  We are struggling in many areas and we are hoping and praying that the students are going to put forth their best effort and that this grant will prove to have made a difference.   We have some very bright students with the capability to do far better than what they are showing.

Progress Indicators and Attitude Shifts:  Attitudes are great!  I work with the hardest working teachers in the world.  No matter what I throw at them they make the best of it.  Everyone is a little stressed over terra nova and the fact that we have missed some unscheduled days this past week, but all in all things are going well.   The Labs are a huge success and everyone is enjoying the new software and equipment.  Complaints are small and rare.  The students are working so hard on their various projects and it so encouraging to see what they can create and see how they are going beyond their assignments to make something better.  I love seeing their excitement when they see what they have created and when others read the stories they have written.

Management Issues:   I had to make a new set of Lab rules.   I hated to do it, but it was a necessity.  I have logged more complaints about the lab then anything else.  Most of the complaints are due to the fact that the same teachers are always checking it out.  Many are upset that they never can find an open date to check it out.  My answer to this was to post new rules.  It can only be checked out for 1 two hour block twice per month.  Hopefully this will enable more teachers to have access.  I know that there are simply not enough labs for a school this size.  I regret that, but right now all I can do is to encourage the teachers to share.  I am so glad that the equipment is being used.  I think that is by far the best indicator of progress.  It just so happens that the progress and management of this lab have been my biggest hurtle.  I hope that next week this will not be my management issue.  This is all I have to worry about this week, so really it is not a worry at all.  They love the Lab!  That is a good thing!

March 25-29

This week's Journal has been submitted by Michelle Woods.  She is one of our P.E. Teachers.  This is the first year she has used technology.  It has been wonderful watching her integrate technology into her P.E. lessons.

This year has been wonderful, I have learned a great deal about how to include technology in P.E. class. The first project  that I began was a student of the month program. Mr. Burk and I pick a student from each grade and special ED. The student has to  exhibit excellent behavior  in P.E. class all month. We then take a picture of them with a digital camera and use PrintShop to let them design their own page to be displayed in the hallway all month.  Another technology lesson we have been able to do was a volleyball quiz, we let two of our fifth grade classes use the wireless lab to answer questions to a quiz that we designed using the internet.  They looked up the answers to the questions using the internet sites we provided.    Mr. Burk and I also coached the basketball teams this year.  We let our players design their own programs to present to their parents at the end of the season banquet. More than anything I have enjoyed learning how to use the computer this year. I have learned how to use a lot of the new programs we have gotten this year. For example, KidPix, Tom Snyder's Graph Club, PrintShop, and FrontPage.  I have designed a web page for our department and I never would have been able to do that before.     I have also begun to use other programs such as my Windows Office. This enables me to  make my charts for P.E. much faster and they look so much neater.  . I feel that the training that I have has has made me much more comfortable with my ability to use the technology in P.E. and at home.
